Sunday 19th November.
Our journey started at Bordeaux airport where friend, Jo, had kindly transported us. Our last contact with home!
Flight to Gatwick was uneventful.
I have asked for special assistance (SA) at airports due to the problem of polymyalgia which makes too much walking and standing around quite painful. We were met by a small bus as we descended the steps of the plane and transported into the terminal where we swapped onto one of the buggies. At passport control our driver gave our passports to immigration officer and after he had checked them we were quickly through immigration without the queuing.
We stayed overnight at the Southbourne Guest House in Horley where we had a clean, spacious room. It was just a short walk to an Italian restaurant where we had a good meal before returning to base to watch Strictly Come Dancing!
Monday.
We had a very ample cold spread for breakfast with plenty of good strong coffee. We had to check out at 10.30 but were able to leave our bags in the care of the guest house. Our flight was not until 8.30pm so we had time to kill. Horley is not the best
place for that, it is quite small and on a rainy day not a lot to do. It was only a short walk to the High Street where we had a coffee. After that, exploring another side street the rain started and we found a Weatherspoons pub. By now it was midday so we dashed in there and settled down with a half of good bitter before having lunch. The rain was heavy and it looked as if we were going to have a wet walk back to our lodgings but by 1.45 it had stopped and we got back in the dry. They were kind enough to let us have the use of one of the rooms so that we could change and then called a taxi for us.
We were at the airport an hour or so before check in opened but managed to find a seat and watch the world go by. Then we were checked in, baggage dropped, taken through security and onto another seat, in the disabled area, for several hours before finally boarding our Emirates flight to Dubai.
The flight was uneventful and I managed to get a couple of hours dozing before we landed.
Tuesday
We were booked into the International Terminal Hotel so we didn't have to pass through immigration. Due to it being a very busy period it was well over an hour before we got to the hotel. Our room was spacious and overlooked the concourse of duty free shops two floors below. By now it was turned 9am, local time, so we had a longed for shower before falling into bed and having some welcome sleep. When we woke we were quite hungry so we wandered down to find some sustenance. There were plenty of so called duty free outlets with not a lot of people around. The staff in these places looked rather bored! There were very few eating places and eventually, in desperation, we gave our custom to Burger King which was one of the very few places that had customers. As we were so hungry we managed to eat what I must say, was one of the worst meals I have ever had!
Back to the room to let our meal digest for a while before going to the health spa for a dip in the pool and jacuzzi. All very nice and we were the only people there. The pool is indoors and I have to say is the hottest pool I have ever been in. Not very pleasant really but we managed to make the most of it. The jacuzzi was far too hot for me, hotter than any bath I have ever taken, so that was a quick in and out.
Back in our room we sorted out our bags, the suitcases went through from London to Perth, and waited till it was time to leave and board our next flight. The porter that came to take me, in wheelchair, to our flight was a lovely young man. He was from Nepal and had worked at the airport for two years. They live in a camp an hours bus drive away and he worked nights, five days a week for ten hours a time. Not very good conditions by the sound of it. He said that he had responsibility towards his parents and sent money home to them.
Wednesday.
Our flight to Perth was due to leave at 3am but we didn't take off till about 3.45. Breakfast was served shortly after and then it was time to try and settle down to sleep. I reckon I managed about four hours dozing and sleeping which is good for me. I really feel antipathy towards people who can sleep for the duration of a flight, jealousy I'm afraid. It was a ten hour flight and lunch was served about three hours before we were due to land.
So, at 6pm local time we got to Perth. I was met by wheelchair and we were soon whisked through immigration and customs by a very genial porter. He stayed with us whilst Nigel got our bags and took me right out to where Rob and Donna were waiting for us.
They have moved since we were last here and they now live in a modern apartment overlooking the river in East Perth. There is a large balcony and it would be easy to spend all day there admiring the view and watching the world go by on land and on the water. We managed to stay awake until about 9pm, our bodies being rather confused about the time!
Thursday
I woke, bright and breezy , at 4am. I soon realised that I wasn't going to be able to get back to sleep so I crept out of our room and went to sit on the balcony. It was the first time for a long time that I've watched sunrise and it was quite a sight looking out over the river. I went back to bed about 6am and was out like a light until N woke me at 11am. After lunch we all went out to buy some supplies. In the evening Rob fired up the BBQ and we sat on the balcony and had dinner.
Friday.
Managed to sleep till 6am so things improving slightly! Another early morning watching the joggers on the river bank. There is a coffee shop nearby so, later on, Rob went down and got us both good, strong Macchiatos. Very welcome! We walked along the river bank to the ferry terminal and cafes. It seems it is the first really hot day this spring. About 31C. By the time we got to the cafe I was certainly ready to sit indoors,in the cool air conditioned atmosphere.
Later in the afternoon we went to the cinema to see I Daniel Blake, a very thought provoking film. Then we had an Italian meal before returning home and sitting out on the balcony.
Saturday.
I was awake about 4am but managed to get back to sleep and woke just before 10am! My first thought was had I missed the morning coffee run! I had indeed but Rob was kind enough to go and get me one. The apartment complex has a swimming pool and we went down and had a swim. Probably the best time to go down as the pool was half in shade and half in the sun. Temperature forecast to be 36 today. In the late afternoon we went up to Kings Park and took a picnic. Lots of people were up there enjoying the beautiful surroundings and the good weather.
